The Vegetarian Myth – Lierre Keith – Zo. Or, as Lierre Keith suggests, should we be drawing a circle and not a line? This is a review of The Vegetarian Myth and the Amazon reviews confirm that it is the marmite of the book world – people love it or hate it. I will quote Keith verbatim where possible – her writing style is quite beautiful and should be read first hand. Gary Taubes has his critics on the internet, but they pale into insignificance compared to those queuing up to attack Lierre Keith. In Chapter 1 she says: “I got hate mail before I’d barely started this book. And no, thank you, I don’t need any more.” There are many similar . It took me back to my days at Cambridge when I saw an article written by the Student Union president referring to . Why does this only apply to women, I wondered? And then, of course – silly me – this article does apply to both genders, but then so does every article talking about . Keith uses the female third personal singular a couple of times – just to keep you on your toes. She also gets (appropriately in my view) angry with those who think it has been OK to trash the planet during their infinitesimally small time as guests here – for their own greed and personal gain. They tend to be male (CEO’s, world leaders, lawyers etc) and they are certainly . Go girl! Attacking the vegetarian. In Chapter 1, Keith notes exactly why her book has attracted the anger and outrage that it has. I’m threatening a vegetarian’s sense of self.”Keith herself was vegan for 2. She still suffers nausea and serious digestive problems and pain, which make it difficult for her to eat in the evening (if she plans on sleeping that night). Keith explains the chosen route was an obvious one made by her and friends when young: “All the friends of my youth were radical, righteous, intense. Vegetarianism was the obvious path, with veganism the high road alongside it.”She pleads in the opening chapter: “You don’t have to try this for yourself. You’re allowed to learn from my mistakes. Especially if you have children or want to. I’m not too proud to beg.”Keith ends this introduction with the humble statement: “Ultimately I would rather be helpful than right.” I was very little way into the book before I realised she is both. The three arguments for (and against) vegetarianism(Please note – the terms vegan/vegetarian can be used virtually interchangeably throughout the book – Keith applies the same arguments to both views. One just draws the line in the sand in a different place). The book is perfectly structured. FORKS OVER KNIVES. 1,001,526 likes · 35,161 talking about this. Only about one in 10,000 people make it to be 100 years old. What’s their secret. Lierre Keith does raise some interesting points as you have noted in your blog. I have read some of what she has written and have listened to some of her. The Australian "diet guru," Freelee the Banana Girl, claims a high-calorie, raw vegan-based diet — sometimes consisting of eating up to 51 bananas a day — has. The GM Diet Plan gives me variety, yet allows me to completely detox in just seven days. After many other detoxes, I've now done the GM Diet three times with great. There are three arguments that vegetarians make as to why we should all be vegetarian and Keith structures the book in three parts to reflect this: 1) The moral argument – we should not kill; 2) The political argument – we can only feed the world if everyone is vegetarian; 3) The nutritional argument – it is healthier to be vegetarian. The only thing that I won’t be able to answer, while writing this review, is how I would have responded reading it, had I still been vegetarian at the time. It would be wonderful if any vegetarians could try this and share their views. I know that there would have been a time when I would have been as angry as many vegetarian and vegan readers of the book have been. I don’t know, however, how I could have countered Keith’s arguments. I do know that I never believed that there was a nutritional argument for being vegetarian. I have known enough about nutrition, for long enough, to know that liver, meat and fish are incomparably nutritious. This is why I never considered becoming vegan. I could not think how I could get vitamin A, B1. D, iron, zinc etc in anywhere close to sufficient amounts without supplements and it never felt right to be taking nutrients in a tablet when food could provide them. I became vegetarian for the moral argument.
I subsequently strengthened my belief by adopting the political argument. The essence of my belief was that I could be healthy enough without eating animals and animals would be better for this decision. I knew that I could not be optimally healthy, but felt that I was making a moral sacrifice in an age when humans were in a position to . Even though the Barry Groves and Sally Fallon Morell presentations at the Weston A Price Foundation conference in March 2. I still believed that there was a clear line in the sand on . Oh boy! In a nutshell the moral vegetarian argument is “we should not kill”. Keith’s response is: a) There is absolutely nothing, nothing at all, that even a vegan can eat that something has not died for (several living things in fact); b) Man is not at the top of a food chain – that is an arrogant view that only . All humans are part of the circle of life. Our bodies end up as food for the soil, just as every other animal that dies (ideally on the prairie) leaves their nutrients and minerals to go back into the soil for new life. When Keith expanded upon the first point, I was kicking myself within seconds. How could I have been so naive? Keith shared her original vegan view: “I wanted to believe that my life – my physical existence – was possible without killing, without death. It’s not.”Before long, the examples came thick and fast and became irrefutable. How many slugs are killed for a lettuce? How many millions of species in a tablespoon of top soil are trashed every second by Cargill? How many rabbits and mice are killed in cultivated fields by industrial size farming equipment? How many fish die, so that rivers can be diverted to irrigate the vegan’s grains? How many wolves and bison have been killed because we turned their homeland into farmland – for grains and plant food? Keith answers the last one: “There were somewhere between 6. United States in 1. Now there are 3. 50,0. The land held between 4. The North American prairie has been reduced to 2% of its original size and the topsoil, once twelve feet deep, can now only be measured in inches.”b) Point (b) is so integrally linked to (a) – one of the reasons that no life is possible without death is that the soil upon which life depends relies upon death to return nutrients to the land. Keith explains her first hand experience of trying (and failing) to grow her own food without anything needing to die. Keith tried it and then some! The full story is funny and powerful at the same time). Organic Gardening magazine soon explained to Keith that the first commandment of organic growing was “feed the soil, not the plant.” She learned that Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium was the “triple Goddess of gardeners.” All three are minerals given back to the land when animals (including humans) die. We can get nitrogen from fossil fuels, or nitrogen can be given back to the land by the circle of life and death. We are not far from the time (peak oil and all that) when we have the stark choice – use fossil fuels for fertiliser for food or for running the power upon which modern life has come to depend. What do we do when the oil runs out? Manure and carcasses or fossil fuel for fertiliser? If you live in Vermont or California and eat vegan brown rice – this is what you’re eating: dead fish and dead birds from a dying river.”– “We’re out of topsoil, out of water, out of species, and out of space in the atmosphere for the carbon we can’t seem to stop burning.”You come to realise that the ultimate role that we (humans) can play in this universe is to continue to be a part of the universe when we die. Whatever happens to our soul, our body is food for worms, which are food for birds, which are food for cats, which are food for their predators and so on. Humans often look for significance – for a sense of purpose in life. Our purpose is as part of the whole circle of life. All of us have this part to play. Keith continues, “The native prairie is now 9. There is no place left for the buffalo to roam. There’s only corn, wheat and soy.” With all that land cultivated for vegetarian food, which was once home to free roaming animals, there is also no natural process by which the top soil can be rejuvenated. There is only so much that fossil fuel fertiliser can do to repair the damage being done by overworking our scarce land in the name of profit. No wonder (GM) Genetically Modified crops became a necessity – we have to modify crops when we have destroyed the earth to the point that it cannot yield . What about a buffalo?” asks Keith. It requires wholesale extermination of ecosystems – the land has to be cleared of all life.” We use 5. I found elsewhere) – pesticides being designed to kill any living thing that also wants to feed on (our) growing food. I realised in this part of the book that it comes down to black and white and shades of grey. To the vegan, the world is black and white – “meat is murder.” Keith describes this as “a simple ethical code. I was far more black and white in my 2. Things were right and wrong. The simple world of a child is right and wrong. The more mature world of the adult has many shades of grey. The shades of grey in this killing debate are inescapable – you may draw the line at eating cows, but not dogs; you may draw the line at eating chicken, but not red meat; you may draw the line at eating fish, but not meat; you may draw the line at eating eggs, but not the flesh of animals; you may draw the line by wearing leather shoes, but eating nothing from an animal; you may have a vegan diet and wardrobe – but bison, birds, fish, rabbits, mice and thousands of living creatures in top soil have died for your soya burger and lettuce. It’s not that vegans are right and vegetarians are wrong, or vegetarians are right and omnivores are wrong, or omnivores are right and carnivores are wrong – it’s about where we each choose to draw our line. Better still, to return to the arrogant view that . I’m going to draw a circle.” We are part of the circle of life, just as any other animal is. They and we need to live and die to give back to the land, so that birth and death can continue. Foodn. Sport: Home of The 8. Diet by Dr. Douglas Graham. Assessment, Diet, Treatment, and More. A healing system that originated thousands of years ago in India, ayurveda is based on the notion that good health depends on the balance between mind, body, and spirit. Considered a complementary health approach in the United States, ayurveda focuses on restoring balance in the body through a personalized plan that can include massage, specialized diets, herbs, aromatherapy, and exercise. How Popular Is Ayurveda in the United States?
Kapha & Stress. Ojas is an Ayurvedic word that refers to our life energy. Translated, it means "vigor." Stress greatly reduces ojas, which then weakens the immune system. The percentage of respondents who had used ayurveda was unchanged from the 2. National Health Interview Survey. Ayurvedic Concepts. According to ayurvedic theory, everyone is made of a combination of five elements: air, water, fire, earth, and space. These elements combine in the body to form three energies or life forces, called doshas: vata, kapha, and pitta. Although there is a unique mix of the three doshas, one dosha is usually the most influential. In ayurveda, the balance of a person's doshas is thought to explain some of his or her individual differences and the likelihood of illness. An imbalanced dosha is believed to interrupt the natural flow of vital energy, or prana. The disrupted energy flow is thought to impair digestion and allow the build up of body waste, or ama, which further impairs energy and digestion. The vata dosha is a combination of space and air. It controls movement and is responsible for basic body processes such as breathing, cell division and circulation. Vata body areas are the large intestine, pelvis, bones, skin, ears, and thighs. People with vata as their main dosha are believed to be quick- thinking, thin, and fast, and be susceptible to anxiety, dry skin, and constipation. The kapha dosha represents the elements of water and earth. Kapha is believed to be responsible for strength, immunity, and growth. Kapha body areas are the chest, lungs, and spinal fluid. People with kapha as their main dosha are thought to be calm, have a solid body frame, and be susceptible to diabetes, obesity, sinus congestion, and gallbladder problems. The pitta dosha combines fire and water. It is thought to control hormones and the digestive system. Pitta body areas are the small intestines, stomach, sweat glands, skin, blood, and eyes. People with pitta as their primary dosha are thought to have a fiery personality, oily skin, and be susceptible to heart disease, stomach ulcers, inflammation, heartburn, and arthritis. A Typical Ayurvedic Assessment. An initial assessment with an ayurvedic practitioner may last an hour or longer. The practitioner will usually ask detailed questions about your health, diet and lifestyle. He or she will listen to 1. An ayurvedic practitioner also examines your tongue for clues about areas of the body that may be out of balance. The appearance of the skin, lips, nails, and eyes is also observed. After the assessment, the practitioner will determine your unique balance of doshas. One dosha is usually dominant and may be imbalanced. The practitioner also determines your constitution, or prakut. What Might an Ayurvedic Treatment Plan Involve? After the assessment, the practitioner typically creates an individualized treatment plan including diet, exercise, herbs, yoga, meditation, and massage. The treatment plan generally focuses on restoring balance to one or two doshas. Diet - A specialized diet may be recommended to balance a person's doshas. See a list of foods thought to balance each dosha. Cleansing and detoxification - This may be done through fasting, enemas, diets, and body treatments. Herbal medicine - Examples of ayurvedic herbs and spices are turmeric, triphala, ashwaghanda, gotu kola, guggul, and boswellia. Yoga. Meditation. Exercise. Massage and body treatments - Examples include abhyanga, an ayurvedic- style massage, and shirodhara, a treatment that involves a stream of warm herb- infused oil poured on the forehead. Other bodywork treatments include swedana, udvartina, and pindasveda. Herbal tea - Pitta tea, vata tea, kapha tea. How Are Ayurvedic Practitioners Trained? Currently, there are no national standards for the certification training or licensing ayurvedic practitioners in the United States or Canada. Are There Any Potential Safety Concerns With Ayurveda? In the United States, ayurvedic products are regulated as dietary supplements, and aren't required to meet the same safety and effectiveness standards as drugs. A 2. 00. 8 study examined the presence of metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic in ayurvedic products sold online. The researchers identified 6. August and October 2. Of the 2. 30 purchased, 1. Nearly 2. 1 percent of the ayurvedic products tested were found to contain detectable levels of lead, mercury, or arsenic. There is a lack of research on the effectiveness, safety, side effects, and potential drug interactions of ayurvedic herbal products. Although some research has been done, there have generally been problems with the design of the studies. In North America, the use of certain traditional ayurvedic practices, such as emesis and blood cleansing, is considered highly controversial and may be unsafe. If You Are Considering Ayurveda.. Talk with your doctor first to weigh the pros and cons and discuss whether it's appropriate and safe for you. Ayurveda shouldn't replace (or delay) standard care. If you have health concerns, consult your primary healthcare provider first. Be aware that ayurvedic products have been found to be contaminated with metals such as lead and mercury. Growing evidence suggests that coordinated or integrated approaches that address risks from work (occupational hazards) and individual risk factors (such as smoking and diet) are more effective in promoting and improving worker health than traditional isolated programs. A holistic approach in developing and implementing worksite health promotion programs that incorporate a full complement of worksite health policies and practices is, therefore, desirable. The availability of resources, number of employees, location, and nature of work define the type of worksite health & wellness programs an agency offers and the most efficient and effective delivery mechanism that should be used. Programs may be: Fully funded by an agency—delivered directly by agency staff, facilities, and services or delivered using agency facilities with contracted staff and services. Funded by a combination of employee contributions or fees and agency funding. Fully funded by employee contributions or fees. When considering possible funding sources and fee structures, consider: Total cost (presently and in the future) of staffing, equipment, facilities, and implementing and administering programs. Agency mission and employee duties. Financial limitations of employees at lower income levels. The size of the employee contribution should not limit or prohibit participation of employees at lower income levels. Consider financing the cost of services to the point where the contribution is reasonable for all employees. Depending on its size and mission, an agency must determine whether to create its own program or share services with other agencies. While successful programs run on small budgets, sometimes it is more cost effective to share worksite health promotion services and facilities with other agencies in the same building or geographic location. Delivery mechanisms for such programs include interagency agreements, consortia, employee welfare and recreation organizations, and Federal Occupational Health (FOH). Interagency Agreements (Economy Act, 3. U. S. C. 1. 53. 5)To share services, Federal agencies may enter into an interagency agreement on a reimbursable basis. This process offers a convenient alternative to contracting and is often quicker and less cumbersome than the contracting process. Agencies may choose to use one interagency agreement to provide either all of its worksite health promotion services or specific services such as periodic physical examinations for those employees with physical examinations as a condition of employment. Consortia. When no single agency can serve as a worksite wellness service provider for similarly situated agencies, the combined employee population may pool resources and establish a worksite health promotion consortium. A lead agency enters into a contract or agreement with a service provider. An interagency agreement links participating agencies to the contract and the combined employee population enjoys access to worksite health promotion services. The lead agency must have authority to provide the services to other agencies. Employee Welfare and Recreation Organizations. An employee welfare and recreation organization (employee organization) is comprised of interested employees who deliver organized activities and programs for their colleagues in a structured format formally recognized by agency management. All activities sponsored by employee organizations must be open to participation by all qualified employees without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, marital status, gender identity, sexual orientation, or political affiliation. An employee organization may hire its own staff or use vendors to provide services. The organization collects fees from participating employees/members to cover the costs of operating certain entities and activities, such as sundry shops, fitness centers, and snack bars. An agency may provide Government resources to support employee organizations in accordance with appropriate General Services Administration regulations contained in title 4. Code of Federal Regulations. When certain conditions are met, an agency may pay for the rent and maintenance of space, equipment, janitorial services, and the start- up costs of facilities managed by employee organizations. Dues may be collected directly by the organization during non- duty hours, or employee members may set up individual financial allotments to a financial institution. Arrangements for such allotments must be made directly between the employee member and his/her servicing personnel office using a Direct Deposit Sign Up Form, SF 1. A. Federal Occupational Health (FOH)FOH is a service unit organization within the Department of Health and Human Services' Program Support Center. FOH works in partnership with Federal agencies nationally and internationally to design and deliver comprehensive solutions to meet their occupational health, wellness and fitness needs. Services are provided on a reimbursable basis through interagency agreements. For example, FOH can staff and operate onsite health units, employee assistance programs (EAPs), and fitness facilities. Back to Top. Staffing. Agencies have a variety of staffing options. Options include agency personnel, contractors, and volunteers. Each agency must ensure that personnel delivering health services are fully qualified and trained specifically to the duties assigned. Agency wellness councils or committees should work closely with selected wellness staff to ensure delivery of services that best meet the needs of an agency. Agency Personnel. Agencies may hire employees or use existing agency personnel to develop, manage, and deliver programs. The staff may be employed either full- time or part- time, or may be assigned the duties on an “as needed” basis. Many agencies organize worksite health promotion staff and programs under one component for more efficient coordination. Contractors. Contracted personnel can manage a comprehensive program or provide specific services, such as exercise classes or an annual health fair. Following appropriate procurement procedures, agency contracting officers may identify qualified vendors through: GSA Schedule Approved Contractors List. Commercial health clubs. Community centers. Local hospitals. Non- profit organizations. Private consultants. Universities. Volunteers. There are only very limited circumstances under which agencies may accept volunteer (gratuitous) services. Agencies should consult their General Counsel when considering this option. Agencies may provide many health activities through volunteer or no- cost arrangements while ensuring that volunteers have the skills, qualifications, and knowledge to deliver health activities. For example, a trained volunteer might give a presentation on desktop ergonomics. An intern from a local university may conduct fitness evaluations. A volunteer wellness committee may organize a lunchtime walking club. A non- profit health organization may provide free speakers for a wellness education series. Many of these local organizations provide free materials such as pamphlets, videos, and posters, especially if they tie into a national health campaign, such as the Great American Smokeout. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Healthier Worksite Initiative (HWI) includes information on ways to provide staffing resources for workforce health promotion programs. The HWI considers an agency’s size and budget and provides information on staffing, continuing education opportunities for worksite health promotion personnel and tips for selecting a worksite health promotion contractor. Have one portion of brown rice or whole wheat pasta with a tomato sauce (it contains lycopene which is great for prostate health) and a cooked vegetable like carrots, beans or spinach. Have a salad with your dinner and use low- fat salad dressing. Drink water or tea with dinner. For a snack, you can have 1/2 cup of fat- free yogurt with a topping like nuts or one scoop of low- fat ice cream. Robot Check. Enter the characters you see below.
